Chapter 21 – III. Faith, Belief and Vision

T-21.III.1. All special relationships have sin as their goal. 2 For they are bargains with reality, toward which the seeming union is adjusted. 3 Forget not this; to bargain is to set a limit, and any brother with whom you have a limited relationship, you hate. 4 You may attempt to keep the bargain in the name of "fairness," sometimes demanding payment of yourself, perhaps more often of the other. 5 Thus in the "fairness" you attempt to ease the guilt that comes from the accepted purpose of the relationship. 6 And that is why the Holy Spirit must change its purpose to make it useful to Him and harmless to you.

Explained: All those you seek to have a close relationship with are the ones you must learn to truly forgive. When you have truly forgiven them and the relationship has been deemed holy (no trace of separation for you have found the right mind that connects you both) you are free to move on to the next lesson. Do not allow how the ego teaches relationships to be the norm for you. That you must find ‘the one’ and stay together for the rest of time. A special relationship is a learning relationship, where you unlearn fear to find love, and love frees, it does not imprison.

T-21.III.2. If you accept this change, you have accepted the idea of making room for truth. 2 The source of sin is gone. 3 You may imagine that you still experience its effects, but it is not your purpose and you no longer want it. 4 No one allows a purpose to be replaced while he desires it, for nothing is so cherished and protected as is a goal the mind accepts. 5 This it will follow, grimly or happily, but always with faith and with the persistence that faith inevitably brings. 6 The power of faith is never recognized if it is placed in sin. 7 But it is always recognized if it is placed in love.

Explained: When Jesus mentions faith in this passage, he means the true way to forgive that has now been granted by God. For this FAITH takes you from separation to sameness, Perfect Love. Sin belongs to the belief in separation, the ego-mind. FAITH, how you forgive within takes you to the truth of Oneness within, to where God is. It purifies your thinking and by correcting what you think within it alters your behavior on the level of form, as what is within is seen without.

T-21.III.3. Why is it strange to you that faith can move mountains? 2 This is indeed a little feat for such a power. 3 For faith can keep the Son of God in chains as long as he believes he is in chains. 4 And when he is released from them it will be simply because he no longer believes in them, withdrawing faith that they can hold him, and placing it in his freedom instead. 5 It is impossible to place equal faith in opposite directions. 6 What faith you give to sin you take away from holiness. 7 And what you offer holiness has been removed from sin.

Explained: FAITH moves mountains as it is the true way to ‘forgive within’ that takes you to the truth of Perfect Love within. From the ego-mind of separation to the wholeness of holiness that has been hidden underneath the dark layers in the subconscious mind. Chains, prison, limitation, etc. belong to the ego-mind, and when you truly forgive, by forgiving within with FAITH you undo that which ties you to sin, guilt, and fear. Remember, love frees. So if there is someone or something you are holding tightly too it is a sure sign that this is what you must truly forgive to let go of. But only when you have truly forgiven can you let go, and when you let go with the right mind you know that you cannot ever be separated, for you are One, not two.

T-21.III.4. Faith and belief and vision are the means by which the goal of holiness is reached. 2 Through them the Holy Spirit leads you to the real world, and away from all illusions where your faith was laid. 3 This is His direction; the only one He ever sees. 4 And when you wander, He reminds you there is but one. 5 His faith and His belief and vision are all for you. 6 And when you have accepted them completely instead of yours, you will have need of them no longer. 7 For faith and vision and belief are meaningful only before the state of certainty is reached. 8 In Heaven they are unknown. 9 Yet Heaven is reached through them.

Explained: The FAITH of God has finally been revealed and it is the true way to forgive within that takes you to the right mind of peace and love that has been hidden underneath the darkness of the subconscious mind. When you follow this FAITH your thought has been purified from fear to love, thus it corrects your belief system and allows you to have true vision, for you have removed the veil of guilt that distorts perception. To see clearly you must see through the right mind, with your awareness deep in the lower gut area of the body, where the right mind can be found. Of course, once you know this, it becomes obvious, for this is where those ‘gut feelings’ and ‘hunches’ are offered. Thus, His direction is to always go within and to remove the barriers to the awareness of love’s presence that is your true identity. But you must forgive within, not merely without and to forgive at the cause, some aspect of the belief in separation. It is the FAITH of God, of Truforgiveness, that takes you to the truth of Oneness within that knows and is certain. Why? Because you have let go of the ego hand to take the hand of God that has nothing to oppose it. From here, you will know the Course via revelation and not ego interpretation.

 T-21.III.5. It is impossible that the Son of God lack faith, but he can choose where he would have it be. 2 Faithlessness is not a lack of faith, but faith in nothing. 3 Faith given to illusions does not lack power, for by it does the Son of God believe that he is powerless. 4 Thus is he faithless to himself, but strong in faith in his illusions about himself. 5 For faith, perception and belief you made, as means for losing certainty and finding sin. 6 This mad direction was your choice, and by your faith in what you chose, you made what you desired.

Explained: To have faith in nothing is to judge or to forgive as the ego teaches, which is known as Forgiveness-to-Destroy, for you maintain the belief in separation from Source. You must let go of the ego's idea of faith and know the FAITH of God that is the 5-step process of how you truly forgive. It is an acronym for Forgiveness, Authenticity, Introspection, Trust and Honesty. It is how you have FAITH in yourself, for it takes you from the ego-mind, the wrong mind of judgment and attack, to the right mind of peace and love, that is who You are in truth. The Self that is One with God. That is being and not body. To have faith in the ego is to believe you are separate. To have FAITH in God is to truly forgive the barriers to the awareness of love’s presence within that leads you to your perfect, peaceful, powerful Self. In each moment you decide what you want to be, but to know God you must locate the right mind by forgiving within, not merely without.

 T-21.III.6. The Holy Spirit has a use for all the means for sin by which you sought to find it. 2 But as He uses them they lead away from sin, because His purpose lies in the opposite direction. 3 He sees the means you use, but not the purpose for which you made them. 4 He would not take them from you, for He sees their value as a means for what He wills for you. 5 You made perception that you might choose among your brothers, and seek for sin with them. 6 The Holy Spirit sees perception as a means to teach you that the vision of a holy relationship is all you want to see. 7 Then will you give your faith to holiness, desiring and believing in it because of your desire.

Explained: Sin simply means the belief in separation, which is where the shadows of suffering come from. When we went from being the everything, the Child of God, to being the ego-mind and body, which is home to separation. The idea that sin is possible. Each shadow seen in time projects from this mad idea that we are no longer Home, that we are bound to death, disease, and destruction. The Holy Spirit utilizes every shadow of darkness to truly forgive, which is The Treasure Map in form. For hidden deep within you, which the idea of sin covers, is the Oneness of Perfect Love that will ease every pain, problem, or punishment seen in time. 

 To give your FAITH to holiness is to forgive within whenever fear is found. If you are not at peace you are being punished, so start to truly forgive the shadows of suffering, by forgiving within with The Treasure Map, and true healing will happen. This is how you truly heal, you slowly and gently take the darkness and dissolve it with Truforgiveness until only love remains. If you continue to do this, there will be no dark shadows left and you will see the truth of love, Perfect Love. 

T-21.III.7. Faith and belief become attached to vision, as all the means that once served sin are redirected now toward holiness. 2 For what you think is sin is limitation, and whom you try to limit to the body you hate because you fear. 3 In your refusal to forgive him, you would condemn him to the body because the means for sin are dear to you. 4 And so the body has your faith and your belief. 5 But holiness would set your brother free, removing hatred by removing fear, not as a symptom, but at its source.

Explained: To remove hatred is to forgive within to shift your thinking from the limited mind of ego-identification to the right mind of peace and love. Where there is no belief in sin, for sameness is true, not separateness. When you refuse to forgive you chain yourself to the little mind of ego, that is home to the body. And this is then what you put your faith in. To put your FAITH in God is to ‘forgive within’ to remove the barriers to the awareness of love’s presence and to forgive at the cause, some aspect of the belief in separation from Source. This is the true cause of every suffering we seem to move through in time. And this belief has been hidden by the ego deep within the darkness of the subconscious mind.

T-21.III.8. Those who would free their brothers from the body can have no fear. 2 They have renounced the means for sin by choosing to let all limitations be removed. 3 As they desire to look upon their brothers in holiness, the power of their belief and faith sees far beyond the body, supporting vision, not obstructing it. 4 But first they chose to recognize how much their faith had limited their understanding of the world, desiring to place its power elsewhere should another point of view be given them. 5 The miracles that follow this decision are also born of faith. 6 For all who choose to look away from sin are given vision, and are led to holiness.

Explained: To free your brother from the body or the belief in separation is to take what you see in your brother and withdraw these shadows of darkness. By dissolving the darkness, the belief in separation, it undoes the idea of sin and only the truth of love remains. When you have faith in the world and what is outside of you, you give power to nothingness, for the world of form is nothing. It is You that is everything, not from the ego-mind of judgment and attack, but from the right mind within that knows beingness and not bodily-identification. When you follow the FAITH of God you will discover your holiness: the Oneness of Perfect Love and gone will be the belief in sin, guilt, and fear, for you will know You are the Son of God, in the name of wholeness, not separateness. 

T-21.III.9. Those who believe in sin must think the Holy Spirit asks for sacrifice, for this is how they think their purpose is accomplished. 2 Brother, the Holy Spirit knows that sacrifice brings nothing. 3 He makes no bargains. 4 And if you seek to limit Him, you will hate Him because you are afraid. 5 The gift that He has given you is more than anything that stands this side of Heaven. 6 The instant for its recognition is at hand. 7 Join your awareness to what has been already joined. 8 The faith you give your brother can accomplish this. 9 For He Who loves the world is seeing it for you, without one spot of sin upon it, and in the innocence that makes the sight of it as beautiful as Heaven.

Explained: To see no sin in the world is to undo the belief in separation, by forgiving within, to locate the right mind hidden deep within the subconscious mind. It is your allegiance to ego that makes the darkness you see without, even those supposed sins you see in a brother. It is all your picture, and when you undo the guilt within your mind you see clearly. For you see the truth of wholeness, that comes from right-minded thinking. The world becomes light and lovely in your eyes, for you have removed the belief in darkness the idea of separation had made.

T-21.III.10. Your faith in sacrifice has given it great power in your sight; except you do not realize you cannot see because of it. 2 For sacrifice must be exacted of a body, and by another body. 3 The mind could neither ask it nor receive it of itself. 4 And no more could the body. 5 The intention is in the mind, which tries to use the body to carry out the means for sin in which the mind believes. 6 Thus is the joining of mind and body an inescapable belief of those who value sin. 7 And so is sacrifice invariably a means for limitation, and thus for hate.

Explained: It is not a sacrifice to give up the grievance of ego thinking, for they cover the truth of love that is your natural inheritance. Yet, the ego will tell you that it is a sacrifice. Do not listen to this. Give up all your pain and punishment and you will find the peace of God restored to your mind. To give up is to forgive within, not ignore. The truth of sacrifice that you make when you value the grievance is you give up your true Self for the fake self of lack, limitation, and lovelessness that is home to hate.

T-21.III.11. Think you the Holy Spirit is concerned with this? 2 He gives not what it is His purpose to lead you from. 3 You think He would deprive you for your good. 4 But "good" and "deprivation" are opposites, and cannot meaningfully join in any way. 5 It is like saying that the moon and sun are one because they come with night and day, and so they must be joined. 6 Yet sight of one is but the sign the other has disappeared from sight. 7 Nor is it possible that what gives light be one with what depends on darkness to be seen. 8 Neither demands the sacrifice of the other. 9 Yet on the absence of the other does each depend.

Explained: The ego thinks it is great to hold onto grievances and guilt, but this simply reinforces the idea that separation is true. For separation belongs to duality, not the non-duality of Perfect Love. You cannot see through the wrong mind and the right mind. You must choose. One brings you pain and punishment, whilst the latter offers peace and love. To shift from the wrong mind to the right is to follow the FAITH of God, purify your thinking from fear to love, and see with the eyes of innocence that offers the happy dream in time. 

T-21.III.12. The body was made to be a sacrifice to sin, and in the darkness so it still is seen. 2 Yet in the light of vision it is looked upon quite differently. 3 You can have faith in it to serve the Holy Spirit's goal, and give it power to serve as means to help the blind to see. 4 But in their seeing they look past it, as do you. 5 The faith and the belief you gave it belongs beyond. 6 You gave perception and belief and faith from mind to body. 7 Let them now be given back to what produced them, and can use them still to save itself from what it made.

Explained: The body is the symbol of separation in time. To the ego-mind, the body is your home. In the right mind of peace and love, the body is your teaching device in time. You must love and respect your body and allow it to be used to take you out of time, not in death, but in awakening. The blind are the ones addicted to ego thinking that believe separation is true. When you locate the right mind hidden deep within the darkness of the subconscious that knows being and not body, you see the truth of wholeness that has been hidden behind the pictures of separation the ego’s eyes deem is true. To be saved is to withdraw your thinking from the wrong mind that believes the body is your god to find the truth of wholeness within that knows God is, for all else is but a dream.
